What the new Massachusetts ADU Law means for homeowners and builders

Massachusetts homeowners have a new opportunity that is creating excitement throughout the construction industry. Thanks to the state's recently enacted Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) law, property owners now have greater flexibility to add additional living space to their properties than ever before. Under the Affordable Homes Act, qualifying ADUs up to 900 square feet can now be built by-right in many residential areas that allow single-family homes. This means homeowners may be able to build an ADU without going through the lengthy special permit process that was often required in the past. ADUs, sometimes called in-law suites, backyard cottages, garage conversions, or secondary dwelling units, are becoming one of the most practical ways to address housing needs while maximizing the value of existing properties.
